anythingphotography:

The Cycle of Abuse Illustrated Through Single Photos and Multiple Models

Statistics show that 70% of people who are abused as children will grow up into adults who will in turn abuse children. A recent awareness ad campaign by Mexican organization Save the Children shared this fact in single photographs that are both creative and difficult to stomach.

The advertisements were originally published back in May 2012, and were created by Mexican agency Y&R and photographer Ale Burset.

Each one uses five models showing one individual at different stages of life. In the foreground, the individual is experiencing abuse as a child. Older versions of the abused child grow up as they walk across the background of the frame, and turn into the original abuser by the time they walk a full circle.

“70% of abused children turn into abusive adults. Donate at savethechildren.mx,” the advertisements say.

This is… /terrifyingly/ well-done.

We don’t know how French ad agency Fast Mood was able to pull this off and so quickly; but, they did. They got four of the major sportswear brands including Nike, Puma,Adidas, and New Balance to cosponsor an ad for Boston that simply stated, “Today we are all in the same team.” An incredibly moving print piece.

I see a lot of students who have changed their books over and over again because they’re trying to tailor it to what they think the agency they’re going into wants to see, and it ends up not being their portfolio anymore. And, if they do get a job off of it, the book that was hired isn’t really representative of what they can do or want to do, and it never ends up being [good]. Because they went into an agency that doesn’t really want them but they want this sort of construct that was hired, and then the team can’t really deliver it day-to-day. And they don’t want to. And that’s an unhappy marriage. So I think if you stay true to yourself, work really, really hard, and do interesting things, interesting things will happen to you.”

- Nick Strada, AKQA

An older piece. And I was getting reasonably good responses from it. It was a very tight, solid book. But then I finally sent it to Tim Hanrahan who was working at Wieden+Kennedy at that time and he was the one who really encouraged me. He was the one who told me, “Yeah, this is a very solid book, but it’s kind of like every other book I see. I’d like to see something that represents you more.” And at that point, I stopped…I had been making a book that I thought would get me hired at an ad agency instead of making a book that I was in love with. And at that point, I threw out almost everything in my book and started over. And I stopped thinking about what any creative director, or any ad agency would think–my only criteria was: “Does this honestly represent something that I personally love and think is hilarious?” And if I couldn’t answer yes to that question, it didn’t go in.
